I love this pic. It is taken in similar "looking-down-through-a torii" fashion as another stereoview taken elsewhere in Japan about 15 years earlier by an American photographer :

Note that the Shinto Shrine is called a [Buddhist] "Temple" in the original caption on the mount.
In the minds of the average Japanese, they were all the same thing anyway, and would just as soon pray at one or the other — much like today. Very few Japanese, both then and now, have any real "faith" in either system of religion, and only go through the external motions
